Hello and welcome! My name is Christina and I’m an occupational therapist living in New York with my husband and two daughters (…and dog, cat & chickens!). Throughout my career, I’ve gathered a few tips and tricks along the way and wanted to start this blog to share some insights and helpful information. I have experience working with children who have developmental delays, autism spectrum disorders, neurological impairments and emotional disturbances. I’ve worked with children of various ages (early intervention through 5th grade) and also have worked with the older adult population doing home health care.
One day along the way, I came up with an awesome idea to start Sensory TheraPLAY Box. My inspiration for starting this company was seeing a huge need for it in my field. I am frequently asked by the parents of my clients: “what toys and activities should I do with my child at home?” Parents ask, “where can I buy that?” or “what toys are appropriate for my son?” I found myself frequently writing out lists of items that would be helpful to purchase for use at home.
In addition, the idea also sparked from my husband gifting me a subscription box one year for Christmas. Each month, I was surprised with a cute box of crystals, handmade jewelry, aromatherapy products, books, and other quirky items. I fell in love with the subscription box concept and thought to myself, “why don’t I do something like this?… Except, I’ll create a fun box for children with special needs, and fill it with sensory items!” That’s when Sensory TheraPLAY Box was born.
I am happy to say that I am now able to give families the tools they need to engage their child in fun sensory play while promoting the development of important sensory motor skills. The items I select are either:
1. Favorites in the “therapy world” that therapists use
2. “Tried and true” goodies that have had positive feedback from parents over the years
3. Everyday toys that you would see in a toy-store that aren’t necessarily marketed towards special needs children, but that have developmental and sensory benefits.
4. And most importantly…the KIDS’ favorite toys! There are always those items that kids gravitate to or just love to play with. These are the types of things included in Sensory TheraPLAY Box!
I hope you enjoy my blog as I share occupational therapy tips and techniques to parents and those who care for children with special needs. Here, you will find many useful ideas and helpful insights. Enjoy!
